The moisture content of soil is the weight of the water in the soil divided by the weight of the dry soil particles. This is measured by weight a soil sample in its natural state, then placing it in a scientific oven with circulated air at a precise temperature until it reaches a constant mass. Once the constant or “dried” mass is known, the moisture content can be calculated as a percentage.
