One of the main responsibilities of a geotechnical engineer is to complete soil settlement analysis on new planned construction based on the design loads and soil conditions. This can be done in numerous ways depending on the types of foundations used, soil types provided, and project complexity. In general, most projects require less than 1 inch of total post-construction settlement, with less than ¾ inch of differential settlement.
