Retro-Commissioning

Retro-commissioning (RCx) is the application of the commissioning process to existing buildings. The process allows building owners to reduce energy usage and bills by restoring the building’s operations and maintenance (O&M) procedures.

Partner’s team of certified energy professionals, including Certified Building Commissioning Professionals (CBCP) and Certified Commissioning Professionals (CCP), perform a whole-facility analysis of a building’s energy-using systems to make recommendations for low- and no-cost energy saving measures.

Partner manages the required in-depth investigation of a building’s HVAC system with extensive data logging and energy audit analysis.

The benefits of Retro-commissioning

It is estimated that the average annual energy savings for buildings participating in RCx is more than 15%, with any investments made on energy saving measures normally recovered in just over a year. The low or no-cost measures that are recommended during the RCx assessment can reduce the cost of maintenance and repairs, and help buildings receive an increased Energy Star score.

Practical benefits of the RCx program can include:

  • Improved outside air control and indoor air quality
  • Eliminated “hot” or “cold” spots in the building
  • Decreased supply air static pressure set point
  • Reduced supply air temperature and fan speed in air handling units
  • Optimized chiller or other equipment operation
  • Corrected equipment operating schedules

Depending on the age of the building, retro-commissioning can often resolve problems that occurred during design or construction, or address problems that have developed throughout the building’s life By addressing common but subtle operational problems, RCx can eliminate energy waste while improving the performance and increasing the life of your building’s systems. In addition to significant energy and demand savings, RCx studies often result in improved occupant comfort and productivity.

Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs

Partner’s extensive experience with energy efficiency incentive programs have enabled our clients to qualify for and benefit from numerous local and federal project financing opportunities to offset initial costs of retro-commissioning projects.

As an approved local engineer for a range of RCx incentive programs, Partner’s fees are subsidized so that all energy savings resulting from the energy optimization measures that are implemented and verified as part of the program are delivered directly to client’s bottom line.

Partner assists building owners survey and analyze energy consumption through energy audits and retro-commissioning, helping them comply with the Greener Greater Buildings Plan (GGBP) mandate and shift towards energy efficiency. 

Building Energy Efficiency Certification

Participation in RCx programs may help building owners qualify for, or improve, green building rating certifications, such as Energy Star and LEED. Partner will lead clients through the various steps to make the complicated certification process easy: from energy audits, energy evaluation to the Certification application process and maintenance.
