I recently wrote an article for Commercial Observer detailing the rise of mandatory seismic retrofit ordinances and ways that property owners can comply, while optimizing their budgets and risk tolerance. Originating in San Francisco, these ordinances have cascaded across several California cities. It is not inconceivable that there are ordinances in all seismic hazard zones across the country. Until then, it is wise for property owners to invest in seismic risk assessments/probable maximum loss reports and engage with a knowledgeable consultant to discuss retrofit options.
