Lateral Earth Pressures

Lateral earth pressures are the forces exerted by soil that are not strictly vertical. These can be measured directly, however, more often they are estimated by a knowledge of soil index or strength properties. They are needed for the design of retaining walls, shoring, deep foundations, slopes, and other structures.
