Renewable Electricity Ordinance

San Francisco’s 100% Renewable Electricity Ordinance

This ordinance mandates that large nonresidential buildings in San Francisco source 100% of their electricity from renewable or greenhouse gas-free sources. The goal is to reduce carbon emissions and promote clean energy usage in the city’s commercial sector.

Compliance deadlines are based on building size, with buildings over 250,000 square feet required to comply by December 31, 2024. Building owners can meet this requirement by enrolling in programs like CleanPowerSF’s SuperGreen or PG&E’s Solar Choice, or by procuring renewable energy through other approved means.

Compliance Identification

  • Regulatory Body: San Francisco Department of the Environment
  • Jurisdiction: City and County of San Francisco, California
