Mandatory Benchmarking: A National Trend Towards Energy Efficiency

Partner Energy's Dana Weiss has written an article in Real Estate Finance & Investment detailing the Los Angeles Existing Building Energy and Water Efficiency Program (LAEBEWE), a mandatory energy and water benchmarking program with a June 1, 2018 complicance deadline. While the program doesn't detail specific targets for water or energy savings, its goal of transparency and awareness will increase conservation efforts and energy efficient improvements to lower carbon emissions, while reducing costs for building owners. Because 39% of US energy consumption was attributed to residential and commercial real estate sectors, it is reasonable to expect similar programs and initiatives in other US cities in the years to come.
