Partner was contacted by the client to abandon-in-place or remove a 550-gallon diesel fuel underground storage tank (UST) at a healthcare facility. Due to the location of the UST near the building foundation, the UST was abandoned-in-place. Partner subcontracted RW Collins to abandon the UST in place with concrete slurry, and CS Drilling to advanced borings around the UST to satisfy the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) requirements for UST abandonment. Partner collected soil samples from the borings and then prepared the closure report for the site. The IEPA LUST Section then approved the closure with a No Further Remediation letter.
The challenges included having to abandon the UST in place instead of a more typical UST removal due to the proximity of the building foundation, having to advance soil borings within a parking garage with height clearance issues, and satisfying the IEPA LUST regulations for sampling for an abandonment-in-place.
The project was completed on-schedule and with no land use restrictions on the No Further Remediation letter.
