Underground storage tanks may need to be removed due to concerns about leaks, corrosion, or aging infrastructure, which can lead to soil and groundwater contamination. Removal is necessary to prevent environmental damage, protect human health, and comply with regulations.
Underground storage tanks pose environmental risks such as soil and groundwater contamination, which can result in exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants. Leaks or spills from USTs can contaminate drinking water supplies, harm ecosystems, and pose health risks to humans and wildlife.
Yes, there are federal and state regulations governing underground storage tank removal, such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Underground Storage Tank Program administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). State and local agencies may also have additional requirements and regulations. Compliance with these regulations is essential to ensure safe and proper UST removal and cleanup.
UST removal is typically required when tanks are no longer in use, when a property is being sold or transferred, or when there is evidence of leaks or contamination. Regulatory agencies often have specific requirements for UST removal, such as notification, testing, and cleanup procedures.
