Registered Environmental Assessor (REA)

Registered Environmental Assessor or “REA” is a designation given by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to identify and register environmental assessment and compliance professionals. The California Registered Environmental Assessor program is voluntary and consists of two levels: REA I and REA II.  An REA I is for professionals with 5 years of experience performing environmental assessments relating to hazardous substances and/or hazardous waste management (along with other requirements).  An REA II is for professionals who also have experience in subsurface investigations and site mitigation.  For more info see http://www.dtsc.ca.gov/.

A CA Registered Environmental Assessors fit the EPA’s definition of Environmental Professional, which is the person authorized to conduct and/or oversee Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.

*As of July 1, 2012, the REA Program will no longer exist.
