UST Permanent Closure Requirement

California Underground Storage Tank (UST) Permanent Closure Requirement

California law mandates the permanent closure of underground storage tanks (USTs) that were constructed before specific dates and do not meet current safety standards. This regulation aims to prevent environmental contamination from outdated or unsafe storage tanks.

Owners of USTs constructed before January 1, 1984, or certain tanks constructed before January 1, 1997, must permanently close these tanks by December 31, 2025. The process involves proper removal and documentation to ensure compliance with environmental safety standards.

Compliance Identification

  • Regulatory Body: California State Water Resources Control Board
  • Jurisdiction: State of California
