California's New Balcony Law: What You Should Know

Impacts most multifamily properties with more than three units

I contributed an article on California's new balcony inspection law for the May 2019 publication of Apartment Age, a publication of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles. California Senate Bill 721 (otherwise known as "The Balcony Law"), passed in September 2018, will require inspection of balconies and "exterior elevated elements" in most multifamily properties of more than three units. In this article, I answer frequently asked questions including what types of properties will be impacted, what actions need to be taken, and what multifamily stakeholders should do.
