5 Reasons why New Jersey is different for Environmental Consultants

Partner knows New Jersey

  1. A long history of heavy industrial development has led to NJ having the most Superfund/NPL sites in the country, despite its small size.
  2. Every town has its own Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) process (called Open Public Records Act or “OPRA” in NJ) and many records requests can take several weeks, which can cause delays or data gaps.
  3. Snow cover for four months out of the year limits observation of the ground surface of sites during wintertime, which can present limitations.
  4. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) regulations are currently more stringent than in nearly every other state. NJDEP has numerous certifications and programs for who can clean up sites, what work is to be done and how, and deadlines for completion.
  5. New Jersey’s LSRP Program (Licensed Site Remediation Professional) program essentially anoints approved consultants to make decisions regarding site remediation on behalf of the state. This is one of very few programs in the country of its kind. LSRPs must possess specific qualifications and apply for approval from NJDEP.
