Frequently Asked Questions

Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that is produced as the uranium present in soil, rock, and water breaks down over time. Radon gas is found throughout the United States and can seep into homes through air and water posing a health risk. Specifically, the US EPA estimates that exposure to radon gas in the home is responsible for 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year.

Radon commonly enters a structure through:

  • Cracks in floors and walls
  • Gaps around service pipes and gaps in suspended floors
  • Cavities inside walls
  • Construction joints

In some cases, the water supply may be a source of radon. Most recently, the uranium in granite finishes installed in homes has also become a point of concern.

Any structure can have high levels of radon gas. The US EPA has prepared a map to help identify high-risk radon areas, which divides the country into three Radon Zones, Zone 1 being predicted to have higher levels of indoor radon concentrations (on average), and Zone 3 being predicted to have lower levels of indoor radon concentrations (on average). This map is helpful in screening for higher risk areas; however, high levels of radon gas have been found in each map zone and site specific testing is the only way to accurately identify your level of risk.

Radon sampling is inexpensive and easy, and radon reduction systems are available that can reduce up to 99% of radon levels in a structure.
