Frequently Asked Questions

Any structure can have high levels of radon gas and five facts you need to know.

  1. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It’s produced when uranium breaks down. The gas is released through rocks, soil, and water.
  2. Radon is present indoors and outdoors. The radon gas that occurs outdoors it is diluted, so it doesn’t present a health risk. However, radon that gets trapped in buildings can build to dangerous levels.
  3. Breathing radon can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, and the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.
  4. Radon can’t be seen or smelled. This means that you must test for radon to know for sure if it’s in your building.
  5. Radon isn’t just a problem in single family homes. It can be found in schools, office buildings, or any other type of building. New homes and old homes, with or without basements, can have unsafe levels of radon.

Any structure can have high levels of radon gas. The US EPA has prepared a map to help identify high-risk radon areas, which divides the country into three Radon Zones, Zone 1 being predicted to have higher levels of indoor radon concentrations (on average), and Zone 3 being predicted to have lower levels of indoor radon concentrations (on average). This map is helpful in screening for higher risk areas; however, high levels of radon gas have been found in each map zone and site specific testing is the only way to accurately identify your level of risk.

Radon sampling is inexpensive and easy, and radon reduction systems are available that can reduce up to 99% of radon levels in a structure.

Partner has Radon Specialists on staff who are knowledgeable and qualified to answer your questions. Our specialists are National Environmental Health Association National Radon Proficiency Program (NEHA NRPP) Certified. Partner has assisted hundreds of public and private clients in identifying their radon risk and recommending workable effective solutions.

The most common type of radon mitigation system is the sub-slab depressurization system (SSD).  Active SSD technology uses an electric fan to create a negative pressure below the building slab to mitigate the potential for radon intrusion into the building.

Complex radon solutions may require an energy recovery ventilator to reduce radon levels by adding fresh air and creating positive air pressure.

Partner can determine the best solution for your onsite radon issue through diagnostics as well as comprehensive characterization of radon within any buildings with identified elevations.
